The red text on the left, written for the 1833 version of the poem, was replaced by the red text on the right, which is the 1842 version. The black text stays the same in both versions. Minor differences are mostly not highlighted with red in this comparison, such as punctuation, capitalization, italics, and the two endings " 'd" versus "ed". The two texts were taken from this comparison.

In most cases, parts of lines, individual lines, or groups of lines have been altered in an obvious way. Such lines are all side-by-side in the comparison. There are other cases where parts of the old version show up in a different spot in the new version and here I have added an arrow on the left to show where the black (unaltered) part of the 1833 version ended up as black (unaltered) in the 1842 version.

Tennyson interchanged stanzas 3 and 4 of Part I, as well as making extensive changes to them. He mostly deleted the second stanza of Part IV, but a small a part of it reappeared in the altered form of the fourth stanza, which became the third stanza of the new version.

One interesting change occurs in the fourth line of the next-to-the-last stanza. "Deadcold, between the houses high" in the 1833 version, it was changed to "A corse between the houses high" in the 1842 version, where "corse" is a poetic version of "corpse". The line was changed again to "Dead-pale between the houses high" in 1873. See this reference.

These two texts give a tutorial in creative writing, since Tennyson undertook the difficult task of extensive revision of a completed work. In my view the changes were an extraordinary success, representing in most cases big improvements, turning a very good poem into a great one.

To a lady in his shield,

Like to some branch of stars we see
Hung in the golden Galaxy.
The bridle-bells rang merrily,
     As he rode down from Camelot.
And from his blazoned baldric slung,
A mighty silver bugle hung,
And as he rode, his armour rung,
     Beside remote Shalott.

All in the blue unclouded weather,
Thickjewelled shone the saddle-leather.
The helmet and the helmet-feather
Burned like one burning flame together,
     As he rode down from Camelot.
As often thro' the purple night,
Below the starry clusters bright,
Some bearded meteor, trailing light,
     Moves over green Shalott.

His broad clear brow in sunlight glow'd.
On burnished hooves his warhorse trode.
From underneath his helmet flowed

In the stormy eastwind straining
The pale-yellow woods were waning,
The broad stream in his banks complaining,
Heavily the low sky raining
     Over towered Camelot:
Outside the isle a shallow boat
Beneath a willow lay afloat,
Below the carven stern she wrote,
     THE LADY OF SHALOTT.

A cloudwhite crown of pearl she dight.

  • John Stuart Mill understandably disliked the last stanza of the 1833 version in the London Review, July 1835.
  • This new ending is one of the major revisions in the 1842 version. The original had presented the same irony, but rather crudely, referring to "the wellfed wits at Camelot." It had also redundantly drawn attention to the Lady's futile attempts to establish her personality: "this is I, / The Lady of Shalott" had concluded the first version (see Ricks, p. 361). John Stuart Mill called the first ending "a lame and impotent conclusion" (Mill, p. 413), which indeed it was.
  • "Tirra lirra" comes from "The Winter's Tale" by Shakespeare. The red-cross knight is the hero of the beginning of Spenser's "Faery Queene".
  • Not everybody thinks that "Tirra lirra by the river" is a great line. But notice that "river" rhymes with "river", either because there is no other obvious rhyme, or because there is a reflection in the river. Mirror doesn't really rhyme with river, but it sort of rhymes with tirra lirra.
  • You've probably already thought about how the Lady's castle and mirror compares with Plato's Cave. In Plato, the reflections are the phenomenal world; in Tennyson, the phenomenal world casts the reflections. Leaving both cave and castle supposedly results in disaster.
