McGhee in the Gloaming

The notes below are not meant to be enlightening commentary but simply a
record of characters and events to help keep the chapters straight.
- am 0300, Drift
(Age: 22, 1983, Ruby, Alaska, 18 pages)
Karl Ford, mid-30s, thick beard; Julie, younger.
Hemingway-esque: them against nature.
Take supplies to cabin, return with wood.
"Everything is hard out here, and there's risk everywhere."
- am 0700, Most of the Way
(Age: 21, 1984, New Haven and Pittsburgh, 14 pages)
McGhee finished finals. Stole magazine submissions.
Grand Central. Flight sold out. 6 people rent car to Pittsburgh.
Interesting batch of characters in a large van. Bad, wet driving.
McGhee grew up in a small steel and corn town north of Pittsburgh.

McGhee wants a birthday present.
His mother makes a S.B.Anthony quilt for a church fund-raiser.
Quilt is rejected. Accident gives them some money.
His mother gives up on sewing.

McGhee goes to Les's funeral.
Deliberately runs out of gas on the highway. Picked up by Jaime.
Goes to Jaime's small house; meal with family; overnight; gas up.
Eats at "Earls". Helps Earl write eulogy.
Makes it to Les's funeral. Emotional.

(Age: 35, 7-8pm, June 18, 1999, Tucson, Arizona, 6 pages)
Nick is his boss, doesn't contact him. Six months after Kate.
Jeffry had recommended a hill from which to watch the sunset.
At peace with himself and the sunset.

(Age: 25 - early 30s, 10/31/1988, San Fransisco, 7 pages)
Meets Kate at a bar. She writes poems. He was an intern at Xerox
After 6 weeks they become roommates. She becomes a photographer.
Over 6 years she becomes more and more successful and
just moves up beyond McGhee.

Andy, friend. Bill Kennedy, large, friendly, black cop.
Attending. older, male. Resident, 25 or 26, male, Dr. Zeke Trepanier.
Dreaming of past ...
Les and Wil (brothers).
Ann, Janine, Kate (perfect, then lost, gradually).
Ref. to trip with Paul to Turkey (see The Cherry Man).
Mother ill, then dies.
Les (oldest) talked mother into selling house, giving him the money.
Stone a metaphor for much of his life?

(Age: 24, 5/20/1988, Deadwook, SD, 14 pages, Bud Taylor, Mt. Rushmore
Hitchhiking. Old, weathered driver picks him up.
He likes old men. 4 old guys make an impression on McGhee.
- am 0600, The Cherry Man
(Age: 30, 9/21/1994, Istanbul turkey, 12 pages)
Visits with older friend Paul. They sleep in hotel room,
then wander around. They look at locals.
McGhee admits he wants to amount to something.
They talk about Kate and her art.
Meet an old local who gives McGhee cherry juice from a jug.

(Age: 22, 10/1/1986, 12 pages)
McGhee went for "a gold mine visit".
Gives beer money to the alcoholic cook, so they make him the cook.
He had met a friend Matt, went to Alaska with him for a summer job.
He'd been staying in Matt's cabin, but Matt was off (river barge).
He'd been lonely and liked the company while working as cook.
Also earned extra money.
He takes a dunk in cold water, a "baptism", and thereby becomes
a member of the company.

(Age: 59, 2/18/2023, McKees Rock, PA, 15 pages)
Waiting for Ray, Fr. Chepelsky.
He and Ray apparently trying to write.
Priest's first name is Mark; calls McGhee "Franny", then "Francis".
Childhood friend of McGhee.
McGhee admits he was married to Tess, a couple of years.
Lots of talk about early history. McGhee: "I was defeated; I let fear in."
Debate: faith versus none. Ending not clear. Ray meeting McGhee
for some purpose, ? Weird chapter.
- pm 0100, The Calendar Lagniappe 22 pages
("Lagniappe": New Orleans slang: tip, small benefit, or:
A local newspaper that prints a calendar.)
Complex back and forth:
Age: 20, 12/23/1983, Driving from New Orleans to Nashville,
doing things with older brother Les, and talking about Wil,
whose wife/girl friend killed herself a few weeks before in Nashville.
At the end, drives off alone for Xmas in Pittsburgh.
Age: 15, 6/15/1979, Flying to New Orleans, seeing many of the
standard things in the city.
At end marked-up calendar, up to Nov 24 -- stopped at the suicide.
[This is the calendar of the title.]
Quotes: Les's resident room-mates "progressed peristaltically through
the bowels of their rotations."
Les is "more worried about you [McGhee] than Wil."
Priest helped McGhee get right with his parents.
- am 1100, Remember the Sea
(Age: 40, 5/20/2004, Bordeaux, 14 pages)
Breakfast with Yannick and Lucie.
Recently divorced from Tess, which McGhee sort of welcomed.
He signed up to stay with a French family,
A lot of talk about food,
McGhee does a drawing; may be good at it.
Yannick cross between philosopher and analyst.
He goes on a picnic with Yannick.
Kate shows up at the end, entirely unexpectedly.

(Age: 74, 7/15/2038, Coastal Algeria, 15 pages)
McGhee and Kate together and happy, vacation with Yannick and Lucie.
McGhee catches a big fish.
Story gets accepted by The New Yorker.
(In some ways reminds me of the end of "Birdman": where he dreams
that everything worked out perfectly.)

(Age: 33, 1/17/1997, SF CA, 9 pages)
Office work. First smoke break with Fred. Waiting until 4 o'clock
meeting with Jerry. Paul from Istanbul chapter worked with McGhee, recently quit.
Still with Kate from Kite chapter.
Jerry is a non-technical ass, gives McGhee a modest evaluation.
McGhee resigns immediately and happily.
(In next chapter, immediately flies to his father's funeral.)

(Age: 33, 1/21/1997, Pittsburgh, 20 pages)
Father dies. 3 brothers and mother at emotional funeral.
McGhee tells of a horrible experience his father had during the war.
Nice poem by McGhee. At the end McGhee doesn't go back to SF,
but starts hitching to Mexico.

Recollections. He heads east from SF. Job in Sacramento.
Thinks of Tess (no regrets), Kate (regrets). Writes good poem.

(Age: 36, 8/31/2000, San Antonio, 10 pages)
Sees his weird CS teacher Neal Wagner(!).
They talk about submissions stolen from Susan, about writing.
Meets Tess at end, to whom he was married until age 40.
- pm 0500, The Boney Pile
(Age: 14,79, 4/01/1978,4/01/2043, Scalp Level, PA, 16 pages)
McGhee at 14 with only his parents, looking at a worked out coal mine.
Introduces Matt or Matty, 3-4 years older. (Cousin, not other Matt.)
Family stuff, then goes off with his father, talking about coal days.
Father talks about getting old.
Short paragraph at end, 65 years later.
"There was no getting those old days back."

(Age: 22,62, 10/10/1986,8/10/2026, Laberge, VT + AK, 20 pages)
Friend Matt. (Different Matt from Cousin Matt above.) Age: 26.
"Denied it, three times." (Bible ref?)
Then McGhee lands in Fairbanks, 40 years later.
2026: Drives north (!) to get to Matt.
(Alternates between the two times.)
2026: runs into Karl and meets Matt at the same time.
They go down to Ruby on a barge.
(How did McGhee get from Ruby back to his car?)
1986: Heads toward Vermont with Matt; breaks key.
2026: makes it to the circle.
(Quite a bit of stuff in this chapter.)
- am 0200, A Dublin Homily
(Age: 44, 4/19/2008, Dublin, Ireland, 23 pages)
McGhee alone. Meets Mulligan, just fired after 19 years.
Shares whiskey. Goes to bar. Large group comes in.
Like a play based on a group at a bar. Priest gets serious.
"Faith: hard to fix once you've broken it.
When you killed your faith, you killed your faith in yourself too."
Ends up sleeping with Arlene, who gives him some hope of finding his way.

(Age: 66, 7/12/2030, SF, Missoula Mont., 9 pages)
Walking at night in SF. Thinking about writing.
Literally runs into Kate. Dislocates arm. To hospital with Kate.
Hasn't seen her for years. At hospital runs into Kennedy,
the cop from Stones. Then they teleport to Montana.

(Age: 18, 12/17/1981, Butler, PA, 20 pages)
Worries about HS grad speech he's to give. Picking up his father.
Road trip with Russ and Troy. Annoying his physics teacher.
Night bike ride to look at scenery. Soccer teams.
At the ceremony. Physics teacher annoying him.
Wanda coming over?? Confusing talk with physics teacher.
Very chaotic chapter, even as to time! Wanda, Wanda!
Chaos. Not clear if his speech was just one line.

(Age: 86, 3/20/2050, Grand Canyon, AZ, 11 pages)
Drives to GC very late. Kate died 10 days earlier.
Both McGhee and young man Lenny want to jump, but they interrupt one another.
